This tutorial aims at presenting the application of the Internet of Things paradigm and architectures to the field of the protection of cultural heritage.
The tutorial will focus on state-of-the-art technologies for the realization of Internet of Things applications for the monitoring of Cultural Sites, presenting low power data transmission technologies as well as novel smart sensor architectures. Following the description of the technologies, the tutorial will then concentrate on the issues that raise when this kind of technological framework requires to be customized on different typologies of cultural sites. Finally, a set of case-studies will be presented, showing working systems and prototypes as well as the benefits achieved in using these solutions compared to traditional monitoring systems.
The following topics will be covered: traditional Wireless Sensor Network architectures, SIM and SIMless based IoT telecommunication technologies (LoRa, SigFox, NB-IoT, LTE, 5G), environmental monitoring sensors for indoor fragile environments, static structural monitoring, monitoring architectures for monumental structures, use cases and scenarios.
The structure of the tutorial is based on similar lessons created for the Cultural Heritage Protection team of the Italian Civil Defense, and is intended for a wide audience, including people not operating in the Internet of Things domain. For this reason, the tutorial will be structured as follows:
- Brief introduction to the Internet of Things concept and to the Makers community;
- Overview of IoT-based monitoring infrastructures and IoT communication technologies;
- How to create a low cost IoT monitoring infrastructure
- Examples of IoT monitoring infrastructures for Cultural Sites: development process step-by-
step. 2 test Sites and applications will be presented: Medieval City Walls of the Siena, Italy, and the Medieval Aqueducts of Siena. The monitoring structures to be presented are shown in Fig. 1 - Overview of other use cases and possible application scenarios
