The Arkaevision project is aimed at enabling a new way of enjoying cultural heritage through a more engaging and culturally qualified participation by users. The main objective is the creation of a technological infrastructure for the permanent enhancement of cultural resources. Following this line, Arkaevision aims to design, develop and test an integrated system able to offer different modalities of exploitation of cultural heritage’s potential, including not solely the virtual representation of monuments, works of art and ancient artifacts, but also the stories associated with men and myths that in the past have inspired the artists in their works of art. Arkaevision therefore introduces a new communication paradigm, realized through the generation of various levels of thematic insights, usable according to two experiential modalities that respectively use as key enabling technology immersive Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR).
The strategy of involvement and stimulation underlying the Arkaevision proposal is based on gamification and rewarding techniques, able to attract, stimulate and retain the user in his overall experience. According to this approach, typical of "serious gaming", the proposed system does not allow the user to access the whole experience from the start, but rather involves her/him in a progressive discover of available contents, through an exploration compliant to guidelines defined by the domain expert. The progression of the user through the experience, is based on a rewarding mechanism linked to his actions and his interaction with the displayed environment. The interaction is achieved through the combination of an advanced interface and a real-time engine. In order to make system response adaptive not only to the way in which the user interacts with it, but also to its cultural and age characteristics, a user profiling capability allows to harmonize the access to contents, as well as their nature, to a previously acquired user characteristics and preferences. With regard to the MR visualization modality, Arkaevision’s goal is to provide the visitor with a unique experience by making alive ancient paintings to visually explain the underlying meanings in the artworks.
